Detachment (Film #55/366)

3.5 / 5 Stars

Depressing, but quite good. Sami Gayle from Blue Bloods was surprisingly good as a teenage prostitute.

Jess + Moss (Film #56/366)

3 / 5 Stars

Felt like someone trying to ape Terrence Malick, with a heavy reliance on nostalgia over storyline. Even though I’ll probably never rewatch this, I still liked it the first time around.

Take Me Home (Film #57/366)

3.5 / 5 Stars

A good example of a romantic comedy made cheaply but still being very watchable and funny. The only problem I have with this film is the direction they chose to take the ending. Could have done without the final scene.

Edwin Boyd (Film #46/366)

3.5 / 5 Stars

So much better than that Johnny Depp Public Enemies crap. Scott Speedman was excellent and although it isn’t perfect, it was very good for a low budget film.

Battleship (Film #47/366)

2 / 5 Stars

Transformers of the sea. Rihanna’s lines should have been auto-tuned for continuity.

Justice League: Doom (Film #48/366)

3 / 5 Stars

Not as good as the previous two Justice League animated films, but still enjoyable.

388 Arletta Avenue (Film #49/366)

2.5 / 5 Stars

Reminded me of 2006 film Alone With Her, as it is completely filmed using a stalker’s spy cameras. This one is an improvement as it is better acted and full of tense moments. Nick Stahl and Devon Sawa were both good and the ending was unexpected.

Safe House (Film #50/366)

1 / 5 Stars

Wow, this was horrible. I actually kept saying to myself throughout this film ‘Who cares? Why should I care that this is happening? Seriously what the fuck?’

Rampart (Film #51/366)

4 / 5 Stars

An honest and intense story of a corrupt cop who can’t get out of his own way, and becomes an intriguing anti-hero. Woody Harrelson is impressive as the lead and is supported by an amazing cast; Ben Foster, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Buscemi, Brie Larsen, Ned Beatty, Robin Wright and Anne Heche.

Get the Gringo (Film #52/366)

2.5 / 5 Stars

Mel Gibson works his way out of a Mexican prison while giving a particularly wooden performance. I wasn’t bored though.

Intruders (Film #53/366)

3 / 5 Stars

Nice little horror film that was wonderfully cast and acted, while the plot starts off strong but winds down to being predictable and clichéd around half way through. Pilar López de Ayala is beautiful.

Take This Waltz (Film #54/366)

4.5 / 5 Stars

Michelle Williams once again gives an excellent example of why she is one of the best actresses working right now. Also one of the first times I haven’t disliked Seth Rogan. The film is wonderfully directed by Sarah Polley and gives a brutally honest account of a married woman falling for another man. While is isn’t as hard to watch and depressing as Blue Valentine, it definitely has its moments of emotional turmoil. I can’t wait for both Sarah Polley and Michelle Williams’ next films.

So I let this get away from me… a lot. Probably due to laziness when it comes to the review part. So this is just a quick way for me to get back up to date without a big review. I’ll start with the 2012 films I’ve seen since I last posted. It has taken until this weekend to actually see a 2012 film that I love, which isn’t a great sign for the year (in the next post)

High Road (Film #37/366)

2 / 5 Stars

Pretty bad stoner film with a couple of nice cameos.

The Avengers (Film #38/366)

3.5 / 5 Stars

Fun. Probably the best of the superhero films but still lacking.

Chronicle (Film #39/366)

2 / 5 Stars

I liked this the first time, but watched it a week later with friends and realised it was bad. The characters are two dimensional and there is a severe lack of story. The final third may have been action packed, but it was also unimaginative and predictable.

This Means War (Film #40/366)

2 / 5 Stars

Totally forgettable, but at least it wasn’t horrible, and Tom Hardy is better than this..

The Woman In Black (Film #41/366)

3 / 5 Stars

I was not expecting to like this at all, but the slow building horror style was great and provided a few genuinely scary moments. Daniel Radcliffe did surprisingly well in a mature role, although I think that a more seasoned actor could have made this one of the better horror films of the past 10 years.

Man on a Ledge (Film #42/366)

2 / 5 Stars

Would have been better without such an awful lead actor. Sam Worthington is the worst. I did like some of the supporting cast (Burns, Mackie, Bell), but it wasn’t enough to make me care.

John Carter (Film #43/366)

2.5 / 5 Stars

Doesn’t really deserve the bad reviews, considering the public seems to eat shit up that is a lot worse than this (Avatar). It was entertaining and creative.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Film #44/366)

1.5 / 5 Stars

As if the first one wasn’t bad enough. Here the Rock gets involved in the shenanigans and hams it up big time.

Hick (Film #45/366)

1.5 / 5 Stars

I’m not sure where this went wrong, but I didn’t like it at all. Maybe it was the icky exploitation of a 15 year old actress (not on a Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby level, but still…) or perhaps the horrible writing. I didn’t connect with any of the characters and therefore didn’t care about anything that happened to them. I did enjoy the brief moments that Alec Baldwin and Rory Culkin appeared.

This was exactly what I expected. Seemed to go on forever and although some of the scenes were interesting, most were not. Robert Downey Jr was doing a good Johnny Depp impression throughout and Jude Law was awful as usual.

I remembered liking this as a kid. My niece loves the shit out of it now. I think it is bullshit. That said, I’ve seen bits and pieces of it at least a few times a week over the past 3 months, so it is pretty annoying.

Butch Cassidy is an old man and is ready to partake in one last adventure; the lengthy trek home to America. Along the way, he finds an unlikely substitute for Sundance in the form of a Spanish thief, Eduardo. What was to be a subdued, yet arduous journey, becomes an ordeal rife with shoot-outs, hauntings from past injustices and deceit.

Blackthorn is worth seeing, not only for a compelling performance by Sam Shepard, but for a beautifully scenic, modern-made Western set in the wonderful countryside and salt-flats of Bolivia. The film is low on charisma and even though an old gun-slinger ready to move on isn’t bound to be brimming with charm, at times it can be quite dreary and impenetrable. However, the story is engaging and while the sombre, brooding moments may outweigh the action-filled and triumphant, these moments are never dull, as suspense always lingers.

Not as bad as I thought it would be. Hopefully Eddie Murphy goes back to making films like this (but better than this). I really like Alan Alda too so having him play the bad guy was pretty cool. Tower Heist is a simple crime comedy, and although there aren’t THAT many laughs, it was still relatively enjoyable.

Very slow and minimalistic interpretation of the Emily Bronte novel. With the exception of the shaky cam stuff, the film looks beautiful. What really worked here was the grim and harsh reality that the characters face, both in day-to-day life and in love. I also kind of liked the lack of music throughout, it made the story feel more real. Could have done without the Mumford and Sons bullshit over the credits though.
Although I was excited to see Kaya Scodelario in this kind of role, her acting was the weakest in Wuthering Heights, closely followed by James Howson. The young versions of their characters in the first half were quite good though, so the second half by contrast was disappointing.

Great documentary. Would have been better if it had not focused on Daniel McGowan as he was quite uninteresting compared to the story of the Earth Liberation Front.

It wasn’t worthy of an Oscar nomination, but it wasn’t awful either. The acting performances were the films strength, the weakest link here is that it felt very exploitative in nature, using a real life tragedy, that is still quite close to many, to gain emotional momentum. Extremely Close also dragged on a little too long, however by the end, I was sucked into the drama even thought I felt manipulated.

I don’t watch many documentaries. Partly because I like to watch movies to live precariously through the lives of fictional characters. The other reason is that most of them are about things I don’t care about or are dry and emotionless. This one definitely wasn’t dry and emotionless though. In fact, at one point I even teared up.

I am feeling lazy so I won’t be writing a proper review. Bite me.

I hated this in the beginning but it sucked me in about halfway through. I still don’t like Anne Hathaway though.
